Identifying and Naming Shapes in My World
Goals and Objectives:
Assessment: Assess students ability to locate and identify shapes based on their photographs and drawings. Observe and note the naming of shapes during the group sharing time at the end of the lesson. Email each child's work out of the app for use in the child's digital portfolio. |
Tips for Teachers
Expand this lesson idea or use with the whole class by taking photos of things around the school and throughout the neighborhood. Images of the playground, local park, favorite restaurants, and popular stores will make for interesting photos and discussions. Follow a format similar to this lesson, but project the app for the whole class to see, allowing students to take turns tracing the shapes on the iPad. You can use the clear all button to erase the drawing while keeping the photo background for future use.
Additional time tracing shapes may be included as part of your free choice/center time. Images that have been photographed and saved in the app gallery may be opened again for additional drawing. Expand this activity to include families. Encourage families to find shapes around the places where they live. Invite those that have the ability to send you an email photo of a shape that they find. Share the photo with the class and have the children locate and describe the shapes that they see. Resources:
